Science Square Labs Celebrates Grand Opening with Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Community members of Legacy Labs can finally rejoice in the completion of the first phase of Science Square, a new, mixed-use life sciences district offering lab, R&D, and residential real estate. To celebrate the official grand opening, Science Square Labs and Portal Innovations invited the life sciences and biotech ecosystem of Atlanta to explore their new innovation space and participate in a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Attendees heard from Katherine Lynch (Trammell Crow), Angel Cabrera (Georgia Tech President), and Byron Amos (Atlanta City Council Member) regarding the development of Science Square and the purpose of creating space for biotech and life sciences innovators to thrive in Georgia.

New streets, like our very own 387 Nerem St NW, and their namesakes were also mentioned during the beautiful event that took place on the fifth floor of Science Square Labs, offering incredible skyline views in all directions. Legacy Lab’s new address reflects the inspiring Georgia Tech Biomedical Engineering Professor, Robert Nerem. Before his passing, Nerem set a high standard for biomedical engineering research and developed multiple educational programs for the community. One of which is Project ENGAGES, an education program for local, minority-serving Atlanta high school students to explore their scientific interests. More so, Trammell Crow presented a donation check of $25,000 to the Project ENGAGES organization during the event.

Following the ribbon cutting that officially marked the grand opening of phase one, attendees were encouraged to mix and mingle, enjoy complimentary coffee and breakfast, explore the fifth floor patio and its spectacular scenery, and even take a tour of lab space from Portal Innovations. The life sciences venture capital firm is leading the way for industry innovation in Atlanta, successfully becoming an incubator powerhouse across the nation and planning to continue their model throughout the Southeast.

On behalf of our Legacy Labs community members, we’re welcoming our new neighbors with open arms – and opportunities to connect and collaborate with one another.
